Winners at War—Yul Kwon Is Coming in With a Level Head and a Packed Resume
In the highly emotional game of Survivor, cooler heads tend to prevail. That’s the case for Yul Kwon, winner of Survivor: Cook Islands. Yul’s rational and intelligent approach to the game made him the brains of his alliance, with a safety net in the Hidden Immunity Idol to boot. It also got him out of a tight spot, going from an 8-4 disadvantage to getting his alliance to the end, the biggest underdog story in the show’s history. With a tenure in Washington D.C., Facebook, and Google between seasons, we’ll see if Yul’s mind is still sharp for the twists and turns coming his way.

Read on for Yul’s profile, and make sure to check in with Parade.com every weekday for intel on this season’s contestants. Survivor: Winners at War premieres on February 12 with a special two-hour premiere on CBS.
Key Quote: “One of the main reasons that I even wanted to be on Survivor is because minorities were underrepresented in the media. When I grew up, I didn’t see people who looked like me on TV. Whenever you see a lot of minorities on TV, it’s just a kind of caricatures. I wanted America to see Asian-American men as they truly are.”
Greatest Strength: Intellect. Yul’s intelligence was at the forefront of his gameplay, which allowed him to map out the logic that got him the best spot to win. With his brain constantly firing, he was able to use opportunities, such as Cao Boi’s “Plan Voodoo” to split votes around an idol or Adam promising his jury vote if he voted out Jonathan, as advantageous moments to arrange the pieces on the board so they lined up for checkmate.

Greatest Weakness: Transparency. Yul planned to play with as much integrity as he could, and he would be the first to tell you he’s not a good liar. One example was when Yul returned Jonathan his hat after blindsiding him, something that unnerved his competitors as blatant jury management. In modern Survivor, when throats are getting cut left and right, the inability to obscure your motives may cause Yul to show his cards sooner than expected.
